1.     NEW Method Book: Habits of a successful String Musician by Dr. Christopher Selby. Make sure it is for your instrument.

2.     Black 1 ½ inch 3 ring binder

3.     Pencil: Always visible on your music stand.

4.     Rosin: Pirastro Goldflex (cellos) Carlsson (basses) Violins/violas can use a variety of rosin

5.     Shoulder pad/RockStop: All violins and violas must have a shoulder pad. Please label it with your name or initials.

  • Cello and Bass students MUST HAVE a rock-stop.  Rubber tips for the end pin are also acceptable (and cheap)
  • Violin and Viola students MUST HAVE an acceptable shoulder rest. We accept Viva, Kun, Everest, Wolfe, and the very inexpensive contour sponge.

6.     Extra Strings: Violins and Viola need an extra set of strings/ Cellos need an extra A & D string/ Basses no extra strings needed.

  • Instruments with fine tuners should be set up with D’addario Helicore, Chromcore, Piranito, or Prelude strings. Bass strings should be D'addario Helicore ORCHESTRA Gauge or Pirastro Flexocor Medium
  • Instruments without fine tuners may be set up with strings that have a synthetic core, producing a warmer, more mature sound.  There are many brands of higher quality synthetic core strings and many new names added from year to year.  Check the label for the word "synthetic" and check with your teacher about the new brands and the tried-and-true labels
  • No stainless steel strings are accepted on any instrument.  If an instrument is shipped from the factory with stainless steel strings, we ask that the strings be changed before the instrument is rented

7.     Cleaning Cloth: All instruments need a cleaning cloth to wipe their rosin off each day. An old rag, T-shirt, or sock will be fine.
